The Demetrakia Dance Troupe

The Demetrakia dancers debuted at Saint Demetrios' Greek festival in 1981 and grew from one group to two, three, and eventually six groups in order to start dancers at a younger age. The Demetrakia Dance Troupe now has over 100 dancers, as young as 4 years old. The Troupe's mission is to perpetuate the beautiful tradition of Greek folk dance while instilling a strong sense of faith, culture and community in the Greek Orthodox youth of Saint Demetrios Church. The groups perform all over Maryland and surrounding states at events such as church and cultural festivals, school programs, retirement and nursing homes, museums, hospitals, conferences, fundraisers and libraries, to name a few. The Troupe's repertoire includes dances from many regions of Greece including Pontos, Thrace, Macedonia, Crete, Epiros and many islands. The instructors are volunteers who all have a common passion for dance and Greek heritage. The Demetrakia practice on Sundays following Divine Liturgy and additionally on weeknights when preparing for performances.
